It is important for you to follow these instructions before surgery to prevent procedure delay or cancellation.
Preoperative Instructions
Preadmission staff will contact you 7-10 days before your surgery to review your medical history and provide instructions.
If you have not received a call by 4 pm the day before surgery or have additional questions, please call us at 630-758-8800.
Food and Drink
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight unless otherwise directed. This includes chewing gum, candy, or mints. You may brush your teeth, but do not swallow any water.
Smoking and Alcohol
Please refrain from smoking and drinking 24 hours prior to surgery. Do not use Cannabis prior to surgery. Surgery will be cancelled if Cannabis is used within 24hrs of your surgery.
Clothing
Wear comfortable, freshly laundered clothing. You will be wearing the same clothing home, so it must fit over dressing, cast, sling or brace if applicable.
Makeup and Jewelry
Please do not wear makeup on the day of surgery. Remove all jewelry including body jewelry prior to your arrival.
Glass and Contacts
Wear your glasses instead of contacts on the day of surgery. If you must wear contacts, bring a contact supplies and container for your lenses.
Valuables
Please leave all jewelry and valuables at home and do not bring large amounts of money. Elmhurst Outpatient Surgery Center is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Medications
If you were instructed to take any medications before surgery, you may take those with a small sip of water.
Herbal Supplements and Diet Pills
Avoid herbal supplements and diet pills as instructed by your physician and preadmission staff. You may need to stop 1-2 weeks before your surgery.
Please notify the Center
- Please notify the Center if you develop a cold, persistent cough, fever, or any other health related problems prior to surgery.
- You suspect you may be pregnant.
